Hi,
after a reboot, my laptop with pgp dektop pro 9.0.2, won't boot anymore. i've had done a defrag before with an extra defrag-tool.
I've burned a rescue cd from another system (9.0.1). It boots up fine, but when i entered my password, it always shows me that it is a wrong pw.
Cause i have a newer version on my laptop, i burned another rescue cd (9.0.2).
While booting the rescue cd, it always says
"internal error accessing disk 0x80. cannot continue. press any key to halt the system..."
What can i do, to get my data?
Thanks
Asgard

Hi asgard,
Welcome to the PGP Forum.
This is probably a little like closing the barn door after the horse has already gotten out, but when you use a 3rd-party defragmentation tool you should configure the defragger to exclude the PGPWDE01 file from defragmentation. This is explicitly mentioned in the PGP Desktop release notes, which you are prompted to read during the installation of PGP Desktop:
Whole Disk Encryption and defragmentation: If you use a third-party defragmentation application (that is, not the built-in Windows defragmenter; PerfectDisk from Raxco, for example), PGP Corporation recommends excluding the file PGPWDE01 from the defragmentation process, if the application allows it. In rare cases, incorrect defragmentation of this file can cause boot problems.
In a worst case scenario, the defragger moves and/or corrupts the PGPWDE01 file (even though it's marked as a system file not to be moved), which prevents you from authenticating. And of course if you can't authenticate, you can't decrypt the disk.
Based on the error you're encountering, it is unlikely that the recovery CD will help you in this case (because the defragger has already done its damage). At this point I'd recommend (1) removing your disk, (2) installing it in another computer that has PGP Desktop 9 installed, and (3) attempting decryption of the disk within Windows -- i.e. using the PGP Desktop GUI (and, as a last resort, using the pgpwde.exe command-line tool).

Hi,
thank you for the information.
i've tried to install the hd into another pc, but when i start pgp desktop, i can't decrypt it.
can you give me a tutorial, how i have to use the commandline tool?
Btw. ...where do i find the commandline tool?
Is there a way to create a new PGPWDE01 at the right position?
Whats stored in that "shit" file?
I hope you understand me...but on my notebook are all my files which i've created since i have a computer....and i don't have a backup of each...
thanks

The location of the pgpwde.exe command-line tool is %PROGRAMFILES%\PGP Corporation\PGP Desktop. Run pgpwde -h for help.

Hi,
i've tried to swap the hd from one pc to another.
Now i used:
PGPwde.exe --decrypt --disk 2 --passphrase "password"
But it always says that the pw is wrong...but i'm sure that i used the right one...
Invalid stage2 start sector.
Wrong passphrase!
pgpwde --disk-status --disk 2 shows:
C:\Programme\PGP Corporation\PGP Desktop>PGPwde.exe --disk-status --disk 2
Get Volume Information M status: Auf dem Datentrõger befindet sich kein erkannte

one more question....
what does pgpwde --recover --disk 2 ??
Cause it ask for a new passphrase?!!?
thanks

Well, the PGPWDE01 file contains the record(s) of user(s) that can authenticate and decrypt the disk, so you might be getting the error about "wrong passphrase" because PGPWDE01 was corrupted by your defragger.
The --recover option tries to do essentially the same thing as the recovery CD: scan the disk for valid user records, prompt you to authenticate, and decrypt the disk if you authenticated correctly.
There are some reserved sectors that store backup copies of the user records, although they might have been moved/corrupted by your defragger as well. At any rate, the --recover option is definitely worth a shot in your case.

HI,
today i tried this:
C:\Programme\PGP Corporation\PGP Desktop>pgpwde --recover --disk 2 --passphrase
"password"
Get Volume Information M status: Auf dem Datentrõger befindet sich kein erkannte
s Dateisystem.
Disk is instrumented, use PGPdesk UI to decrypt disk!
But in Pgpdesk UI i can't decrypt it...cause i can't click on the decrypt button (its grey).
Is there a possibility to copy the PGPWDE01 file of another system onto a my hd (with a disk-editor?)?
Whats the meaning of Invalid stage2 start sector.
Is the file (PGPWDE01 ) always on the same position (sektor or what ever), cause when i know the exact position, i can try to restore the file (because when the file was moved or deleted...in the most case you can recover it)
Any ideas??

Asgard
You need to recover disk,
then restart PC,
and then decrypt your information.
